Review of the Neighborhood Summit

The following comments and suggestions were made in a general discussion of the summit:

    · INC should organize another summit next year. Events like these gain momentum when they are repeated. (Joel Kostyu)

    · It didn't work well to have the talks given upstairs, apart from the exhibits. Later the speakers moved down to the exhibit floor, and this worked. (Pat Carstensen)

    · Consider having an INC booth at Center Fest next year.

    · Build to the summit though other popular events preceding it, like for example a presentation by Planning and Zoning on how the zoning process works. Avoid conflicts with other events (this year's summit came on the day of the PAC 3 and PAC 4 meetings.) (Erick Larson)

    · Consider shortening the summit next time, say to 9:00 - 1:00.

    · Include the PACs in the next summit.

INC Elections

The following officers were elected for 1999-2000:

    • President: Stan Hoffman

      Vice President: John Dagenhart

      Secretary: Al Stone

      Treasurer: Norm Krause

At Large: Mary Kiesau and Jennifer Albright

Sierra Club Campaign: Mary Kiesau, a member of the Sierra Club staff, explained the club's "Challenge to Sprawl" campaign. The goal for the next few months is to protect an additional 1,000,000 acres in North Carolina. This is to include urban greenways as well as the rural and wild areas usually associated with Sierra Club campaigns. She passed out a brochure, Grow Smart, that describes the campaign.

Rape Crisis of Durham: Kris Fenlon, Crisis Intervention Services Coordinator, described some of the work of the center. Services include:

    • · A crisis line

      · Support service - follow up, counseling, support groups, helping victims by going to court with them or accompanying them to the ER

      · Coordinating with all the other agencies that deal with rape victims - police, hospitals, etc.

Kris ended by saying that the center needs advocates, board members, and volunteers.

Other: Stan Hoffman introduced Ethel Simonetti and reported that her Tuba Exchange has won a small business award for business involvement in art.

Closing

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40
